While I kept building out my universe, it struck me that nothing in it actually moved. So I built the thing that does.

The shape was always there.

The idea came from looking at stealth aircraft. They are built from a handful of angles, every edge parallel to another one, and my mark already worked that way.

Ten ways to look at one aircraft.

The engines.

This is the part that had to be believable. A ship is only as fast as its engine looks, so I built mine to be opened: a serrated lip, flaps around the barrel, a liner you can see through, a core you can follow all the way in. Nothing in here is a shell, because this is what carries me through the universe from now on.

The cabin is my interface, built as hardware. Same rails, same emitters, same readouts as the page you are on, machined instead of drawn.

The FS-45 is a stealth shuttle I designed and built for the Flyshare Universe, my own creative universe. While I kept building that universe out, it struck me that nothing in it actually moved, so I built the thing that does. This page needs a script to run; here is what it shows.

The shape was always there

The idea came from looking at stealth aircraft. They are built from a handful of angles, every edge parallel to another one, and the Flyshare mark already worked that way. Turned onto its corner it is the plan of an aircraft: the mark gives the airframe its three angles, and every seam and hatch on the ship follows one of them. The model was built in Blender, down to the seams in the skin, the fasteners, the flaps in the nozzle and the glass of the canopy.

Ten ways to look at one aircraft

The film. Fourteen seconds of the mark turning into the ship, rendered in Blender.
The name. FS for Flyshare, 45 for the angle the mark is tipped to.
The model. The ship itself, turning in the browser, rendered live from the same model as every image here.
Interior. The cabin is the Flyshare interface library built as hardware: the same rails, emitters and readouts this page is made of.
The seams. Every cut in the skin follows one of the angles the mark brought with it.
The garden. The ship parked on a lawn between trees.
The readout. The instrument band from the cabin, as a display.
The universe. From here on the FS-45 is the official vehicle of the Flyshare Universe, the ship that carries you between the planets.
On Mars. The same ship in rock and dust, with nothing to hide behind.
There seems to be more. The hull comes apart, and what it comes apart into does not need a pilot.

The engines

Twenty-four renders along the engine’s own axis, from the serrated lip of the nozzle through the flaps, the liner and the flameholder to the core. Built to be opened rather than closed.
